The work of the Chinese-Canadian artist Matthew Wong (1984-2019) is dynamic, colourful and expressive. Of the many artists who inspired him, Vincent van Gogh was the most significant. This exhibition invites you to discover more about Wong’s work and his artistic connection with Van Gogh.
The Congolese artist collective Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC) will represent the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale 2024, supported by artist Renzo Martens and curator Hicham Khalidi. In the run-up to the 60th biennale they will give a preview in De Balie to their joint plan and elaborate on the story behind their choices.
Angels are surprisingly common in our culture, in songs, literature and in art. All types of angels are depicted in art – guardian, fallen, avenging, messengers etc.
They are depicted in sculpture and paint in every size imaginable – from tiny painted angels in the pages of medieval books of hours to the huge looming modern sculpture The Angel of the North.
The first winged Christian angel dates from the 4th century. Winged creatures and gods such as Pegasus, Eros and of course Nike may have inspired the winged angel.
The use of artistic methods to treat psychological disorders and enhance mental health is known as art therapy. Art therapy is a technique rooted in the idea that creative expression can foster healing and mental well-being.1
People have been relying on the arts for communication, self-expression, and healing for thousands of years. But art therapy didn’t start to become a formal program until the 1940s.2
Doctors noted that individuals living with mental illness often expressed themselves in drawings and other artworks, which led many to explore the use of art as a healing strategy.3 Since then, art has become an important part of the therapeutic field and is used in some assessment and treatment techniques.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages. The UDHR is widely recognized as having inspired, and paved the way for, the adoption of more than seventy human rights treaties, applied today on a permanent basis at global and regional levels (all containing references to it in their preambles).
Hermann Karl Hesse (German: [ˈhɛʁman ˈhɛsə]ⓘ; 2 July 1877 – 9 August 1962) was a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. Although Hesse was born in Germany’s Black Forest region of Swabia, his father’s celebrated heritage as a Baltic German and his grandmother’s French-Swiss roots had an intellectual influence on him. He was a precocious, if not difficult child, who shared a passion for poetry and music with his mother, and was especially well-read and cultured, due in part to the influence of his polyglot grandfather.
André Robert Breton (French: [ɑ̃dʁe ʁɔbɛʁ bʁətɔ̃]; 19 February 1896 – 28 September 1966) was a French writer and poet, the co-founder, leader, and principal theorist of surrealism.[1] His writings include the first Surrealist Manifesto (Manifeste du surréalisme) of 1924, in which he defined surrealism as “pure psychic automatism“.
We proudly welcome Lin to the Art Brut Collective!
She’s a well-rounded artist in various disciplines and highly versatile. With years of experience in Art and a Master’s Degree in International Environmental Law, she’s a most welcome addition to the Collective. Originally from Amsterdam, she is bright, enthusiastic, hardworking, disciplined, and an advocate of sustainability.
She specializes in paintings with the ambition to work on a large canvas in the future, she’s prospecting, that’s all we know but we are excited here at the Art Brut Collective. For now, she is focused on her career and personal life. With hobbies like sports and gardening, she keeps herself fit and relaxed, we envy her.
Though reluctant about the phrasing of our Art and hesitant to become a participant in the Art Brut Collective, she joined anyway. We more or less consider her our Patroness.
